How to create a fall-inspired floral arrangement using a pumpkin

Okay I make this every year for my kitchen table and it NEVER gets old!

While the kids love carving jack-o-lanterns (I do too, don’t get me wrong), there’s something so elegant and unique about using a pumpkin and making it your vase!

And you can expect lots of compliments when people see it on your table ;)

I’ve included pictures for each step, PLUS a couple of awesome life-hacks that make this much less messy and much faster than normal.

Materials needed:

-1 medium-sized pumpkin. (I always go for a classy white or green pumpkin)

-one pint-sized mason jar (or class jar of similar size)

-fall florals

-a hand blender (not necessary, but kinda cool to use)

-white vinegar

-water

-a serrated knife

Step 1:

Carve a hole on the top of your pumpkin using the serrated knife.

Try to make the whole just barely bigger than the diameter of the jar you chose.

Step 2:

My favorite step!! Only because I wish I had known about this hack sooner.

Take your hand blender, and, using just one of the attachments, circle it all around your pumpkin to scrape out the goo and seeds.

SO much faster and easier than hand-scraping with a metal spoon. I hate the feeling of pumpkin goo all up my fore-arms!

Step 3:

Dump out the seeds and goo, and pour white vinegar into your pumpkin.

The white vinegar is the second life hack! It helps prevent your pumpkin from rot while also delaying the release of ethylene gas, which shortens the vase-life of your flowers. Win-win.

If you temporarily put the top of your pumpkin back in the hole you cut, you can swish the vinegar around without spilling it—ensuring that the vinegar is coating all sides of the pumpkin’s inside.

Step 4:

Fill your mason jar with water—almost to the very top—and plug your mason jar into your cleaned pumpkin hole

Step 5:

Arrange your fall florals within the mason jar! If you’re looking for tips on specific floral arranging, you can check out this blog post about designing your own centerpiece.

For this particular demo, I was in a major hurry and I literally just plopped these guys in there, but I’ve also included a picture at the heading of this blog of a more purposeful arrangement. Either way, you can’t go wrong! Flowers spilling out of pumpkins are gorgeous no matter how you do it!
